It All Begins With an Idea

The idea that we all deserve access to music has grown into the Note-Able Music Therapy Services you see today, but we’re just getting started.

The video below gives a preview of what’s in store for the outdoor areas of our facility, and why it’s so important for our community to Give, Grow, and Gather.

Entering the next phase

It’s time to dream big for the outside!

NMTS is preparing to transform our very rundown outdoor space into an oasis of trees, green spaces, gardens, and gathering spaces.

NMTS’ new grounds will provide ample spaces for:

  • Respite and relaxation

  • Play

  • Programs

  • Community gatherings

  • A garden in partnership with Soulful Seeds

  • Summer performances

We ALL need access to green spaces

We all benefit from access to green spaces, trees, gardens, and outdoor gathering spaces. For many in our community, access to green space is limited due to physical accessibility, safety concerns, and transportation.

NMTS is conveniently located near four low-income housing complexes for seniors and people with disabilities and is in the heart of one of Reno’s lowest income neighborhoods. People with disabilities, seniors, and people living near the poverty line do not have easy access to Reno’s existing park systems. Due to the demographics of NMTS’ participants and the surrounding neighborhood of NMTS, our new outdoor space will be designed with these populations in mind while also benefitting the community as a whole. Our new outdoor space will host inclusive community events, outdoor performances, camps and children’s activities, community gardening events and classes, and free distribution of fresh produce.

Where are we?

Our facility is ideally located next to Silver Sage Senior Housing, Rita Cannan Elementary School, High Desert Montessori, Rosewood Rehabilitation Center, United Cerebral Palsy, and the Oddie District.

Project Milestones

  • NMTS purchased the Orovada property in December 2021.

  • Note-Able Music Therapy Services moved July 1, 2022.

  • Extensive interior renovations began in February 2023 and were completed in March 2024.

  • Rehabilitation of outdoor spaces is currently underway.

Thank you for your support!

Thanks to our amazing community, interior renovations of NMTS’ new home at 2590 Orovada Street are complete! Our participants, families, and community partners are overjoyed with the space. You, our donors and supporters, are making a difference in peoples’ lives and in our community!

  • Every note, every dance step at NMTS is possible thanks to our generous community of donors and foundations. Thank you!

Donors who gift $5,000 and above will have their name commemorated on a beautiful art installation by Leilani Schweitzer. This recognition element will reflect the many diverse, passionate, and influential individuals and organizations that helped bring this new building to life.

For foundations and major donors, there are many naming opportunities inside and out the NMTS facility. Naming opportunities begin at gifts of $50,000.

All donors to the building, regardless of the size of the gift, will be honored on a plaque in the atrium when all renovations are complete! Every song that is sung and every note that is played, every smile and every dance move will be your legacy.

  • Why is it important to undertake this project now?

NMTS has grown from one part-time music therapist serving 12 people in 2003 to five therapists and two adaptive instructors serving more than 2,500 people in 2024. But 2,500 people a year is just the tip of the iceberg.

Washoe County census data estimates 54,000 people with significant disabilities, 8,745 children and adults with severe cognitive impairments, 4,715 children and adults with autism, and 25,264 people with serious mental health issues. Census data also shows:

    • 8,500 individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease

    • 7,500 individuals living with a disability-related to brain injury

    • 1,130 people experience a stroke each year

    • 1,070 people living with Parkinson’s disease

With additional space, we will be able to expand programs and partnerships to meet the growing needs for these populations and more.

Are your programs expanding as you anticipated?

In the first year at our new location, we have expanded on-site programs by 93%. We are on track to reach our goal of serving a total of 5,000 people per year in 2026.

Can NMTS really afford a building?

Yes! NMTS has diversified and strong revenue streams through program and contract service fees, as well as grants and donations. In addition, maintaining the building will cost less than continuing to rent space would have been. These costs will largely be covered by rental revenue.

Sharing our vision

In many areas of the country, music therapy is only available through hospitals, schools, or other institutions. At NMTS, we know the benefits of music therapy can be transformative for people and even communities as a whole. That is why we are creating a regional center for music and health where everyone can access adaptive music and music therapy services in a safe, accessible, and welcoming space.

At NMTS, we are proud to be a national model for community-based music therapy that values and welcomes diversity in all of its facets.
